Crackdown on Journalists Under Dr. Yunus: Lawsuits, Mob Pressure, Jail, and Harassment Instead of Criticism

During the rule of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, allegations of repression, arrests, and harassment of journalists under the unelected interim government have drawn global attention. According to various human rights and monitoring organizations, hundreds of journalists have faced harassment, legal cases, and arrests. Some have reportedly been targeted by mob violence and even subjected to physical abuse in court.

Citing data from organizations such as TIB and ASK, reports indicate that a large number of journalists have been accused in various murder and violence-related cases. Many have remained detained for long periods, failing to secure bail despite multiple attempts. There are also allegations of mental and physical abuse in custody.

On the other hand, Dr. Yunus has publicly encouraged criticism of his administration. However, in practice, an environment of fear has emerged, where journalists critical of the government face lawsuits, arrests, and intimidation. It is also alleged that even through his press secretary, threats have been directed toward journalists and government officials.

Despite promises of “freedom of expression,” the reality appears different—where criticism leads to legal action, and dissent results in imprisonment. This has raised serious concerns about press freedom and the rule of law. What defines authoritarianism? When speaking out leads to lawsuits and questioning authority leads to jail—critics argue that this is the reality being witnessed in Bangladesh under Yunus’s rule.
