Bangladesh is going through a severe political crisis. Democracy, people’s rights, and the spirit of the Liberation War are being repeatedly trampled. Following the undeclared coup of August 5, 2024, over 100 Members of Parliament are now imprisoned—on false, fabricated charges without investigation. This unconstitutional, inhumane action by an illegitimate government signals the collapse of justice, law, and representative governance.
Most of the arrested MPs are popular Awami League representatives who upheld Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s ideals and were active in the Liberation War. They never resigned, yet they are being oppressed to protect an illegal regime’s grip on power. This is not just political conspiracy—it is a direct assault on democracy and the Liberation War’s legacy.
Many of these MPs contributed significantly to national development—in power, health, education, and digital progress. Now, these public representatives are being unjustly labeled criminals and jailed—a chilling repeat of past oppression.
We strongly condemn this. Democracy means freedom of expression, respect for elected officials, and honoring the people’s mandate. The foreign and domestic forces backing this unconstitutional regime aim to destroy Bangladesh’s sovereignty and progress.
The people are awakening. The nation asks: Why are freedom fighters behind bars? Why are elected leaders excluded while an unelected group rules?
Democracy will not return without the fall of this illegitimate regime. All detained MPs must be released unconditionally. A free, fair, and transparent election must be held so the people’s voice is the final word.
We urge every citizen, political party, and social organization that believes in the ideals of the Liberation War—let us unite and resist this injustice. Now is the time to rise—for our country, our freedom, and our democracy.
