Shakil Ahmed, a student of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University, died by suicide on June 9, 2025.
His only ‘crime’? A Facebook comment. What followed was a wave of online mob attacks, threats to his family, and an environment so terrifying that he chose death over endangering his loved ones.
According to a statement by the Charukla Chhatra Union, Shakil’s death is not an isolated tragedy — it is a direct result of a state-sanctioned mob culture. This is what happens when extremists run free and the government fails to protect its citizens.
Shakil said before his death: “Due to misunderstandings and threats to my family, I have no way out.” He was abandoned — not just by the system, but by the silence of society.
The interim government must take full responsibility. Those who incited the mob must face justice.
We must raise our voices before more lives are destroyed.
