Chandranath Dham in Sitakunda is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in the country, including Chattogram. Right next to this holy site, a Jamaat leader organized a cow slaughter and a political feast, provoking communal sentiments.
Last Saturday, this event was held at the foothills of the Chandranath Dham pilgrimage site, in the area adjacent to Bridge No. 2 under the jurisdiction of the shrine. The program was organized by former Upazila Jamaat Ameer Maulana Tawhidul Haque Chowdhury. Those present included Anwar Siddiqui, MP candidate for Chattogram-4 (Sitakunda), Upazila Jamaat Ameer Maulana Mizanur Rahman, Secretary Md. Abu Taher, and hundreds of Jamaat leaders and activists from various levels.
Although several hundred local Hindu voters were invited to the event, upon arriving and seeing such activities so close to the holy site, many felt mentally hurt and humiliated. Many have also said that, given the current political situation, they are afraid to protest openly.
Chandranath Dham is not an ordinary place— for the Hindu community it is a center of religious faith, history, and emotion. When such events are deliberately organized there, they cannot be seen as promoting social harmony; rather, they are regarded as communal provocation.
Since August 5, 2024, attacks on minorities, killings, and vandalism of temples have become almost daily occurrences in the country—this incident is a continuation of that trend. It is due to the silence and direct or indirect patronage of the illegal Jamaat-backed Yunus government that Jamaat and other extremist groups are gaining the courage to carry out such provocative activities.
